Conversion rate optimization works best when treated as a disciplined experimental practice rather than a series of gut-driven design changes. This SOP walks through the complete CRO experiment lifecycle — from identifying opportunities and forming hypotheses to running tests, analyzing results, and building an institutional knowledge base of what works for your audience.
Opportunity Identification
Quantitative Analysis
Begin every CRO initiative by analyzing existing data to find where conversions are leaking. Use GA4 to identify pages with high traffic but low conversion rates, high bounce rates, or significant drop-off in multi-step funnels. These quantitative signals point to the highest-impact testing opportunities.
Key data sources for opportunity identification include:
- Funnel analysis: Where do users drop off between landing and converting?
- Heatmaps and session recordings: What are users actually clicking, scrolling past, or ignoring?
- Form analytics: Which form fields cause abandonment?
- Device segmentation: Do mobile and desktop users convert at different rates?
- Exit page analysis: Which pages do users leave from most frequently?
Qualitative Research
Pair quantitative data with qualitative insights. User surveys, customer interviews, support ticket analysis, and usability testing reveal the why behind the numbers. A page with a 90% bounce rate might have a speed problem, a messaging problem, or a trust problem — only qualitative research reveals which.
Hypothesis Formation
A well-formed CRO hypothesis follows this structure: "If we [make this change], then [this metric] will [improve/increase] because [this reason based on evidence]." The hypothesis must be specific, measurable, and grounded in the data gathered during opportunity identification.
Strong hypotheses share these characteristics:
- They address a documented problem (not an assumption)
- They predict a specific, measurable outcome
- They explain the reasoning behind the expected change
- They can be tested within a reasonable timeframe and traffic volume
Prioritize hypotheses using the ICE framework: Impact (how much will this move the needle?), Confidence (how sure are we this will work?), and Ease (how quickly can we implement and test this?). Test Design and Implementation
Choosing the Right Test Type
Select the test type based on the change being evaluated. A/B tests work for single-variable changes like headline copy, button color, or CTA text. Multivariate tests evaluate multiple variables simultaneously. Split URL tests compare entirely different page designs. For most organizations, A/B testing provides the clearest signal with the lowest complexity.
Sample Size and Duration
Calculate the required sample size before launching any test. Use a statistical significance calculator with your current conversion rate, minimum detectable effect (typically 10-20% relative improvement), and desired confidence level (95% is standard). Never call a test early based on initial trends — commit to the calculated sample size.
Most tests need to run for a minimum of two full business cycles (typically two weeks) to account for day-of-week and time-of-day variations. For sites with lower traffic, consider testing larger changes that produce bigger effects, as small changes require enormous sample sizes to detect.
Analysis and Documentation
Statistical Rigor
Analyze results only after reaching the predetermined sample size and duration. Check for statistical significance at the 95% confidence level. Also examine secondary metrics — a test that improves click-through rate but reduces actual purchases may be optimizing the wrong step in the funnel.
Segment your results by device type, traffic source, and user type (new vs. returning). A change that helps mobile users but hurts desktop users may still be worth implementing if mobile represents the majority of your converting traffic. These segments often reveal nuances that aggregate data hides.
Learning Documentation
Document every test regardless of outcome. Record the hypothesis, test design, results, statistical confidence, and key takeaways. Losing tests are as valuable as winners — they prevent the organization from retesting failed ideas and deepen understanding of what the audience responds to. Maintain a centralized test log that becomes a cumulative knowledge base.
Implementation and Iteration
When a test wins, implement the change permanently and monitor for sustained impact over 30 days. Sometimes a novelty effect inflates initial results. If the improvement holds, document the permanent change and move to the next highest-priority hypothesis.
Use winning test insights to generate new hypotheses. If a simplified form layout increased conversions, test further simplification. If social proof placement improved trust, test different types of social proof. CRO is an iterative cycle, not a one-time project.
